    Cyrano de Bergerac

This great B + W version of "Cyrano de Bergerac" stars a young, lean José Ferrer as the golden mouthed poet with a four inch nose. Mala Powers, in one of her truly significant roles, plays Roxeanne. But the entire film belongs to Ferrer in his courting ways, in his swashbuckling scenes, in every aspect of the film. The Academy saw it as a once in a lifetime performance and gave the 1950 Oscar to Ferrer over William Holden for Sunset Blvd., Louis Calhern for The Magnificent Yankee, James Stewart in Harvey and Spencer Tracey in Father of the Bride. James Stewart would have been a fabulous Oscar winner for his unforgettable performance in Harvey. It was the only nomination ever and WIN for José Ferrer.
