Vic + Flo ont vu un ours ( Vic + Flo Saw A Bear )

This rather disturbing Canadian film from director Denis Côté puzzled me as from nowhere it opens with a boy bugling very badly, a 61 year old woman standing by him saying she has no money for his bad effort. The woman is Flo, just released from prison.

The film has nothing to do with boys or bugling rather with VIC + FLO two lesbian ex-cons out to create a new life for themselves, their probation, officer, for once, quite a decent chap. Whats starts off grimly for the two women slowly turns sinister with the appearance of a third.

From the title, Director Côté would give the impression that the film will mirror a children's fairy tale but we have no bear. What we have is a clique of bizarre, complex characters, some sardonic bits of humour that put us on edge, an unsettling countryside where anything can happen at any moment... Soon enough we inhabit fully the world of these eccentric beings. What appears uplifting for a few moments begins to haunt and traumatize the viewer as unspeakable acts of terror start to unfold. It all becomes very ruthless and one is left holding one's breath as plot twists totally unsettle the shocked viewer.

This is a very dark, unique Canadian tale that unfortunately starts up rather slowly only to pick up momentum at a point when some viewers seem to give up on the film. Make no mistake, however, the second half of Vic + Flo makes up for the lethargic start. Ah! The bear! The bear of the title is metaphorically present throughout the film, the big, bad bear with enormously sharp teeth, never letting us forget that some horrific acts will soon be unleashed. I would have scored the film higher had the first half of the film been on par with the second.

My last word: Think of something inanimate with big sharp teeth!
