Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak was in my top 10 most anticipated movies of 2015. I LOVE Guillermo Del Toro. I adore Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim and Hellboy, and I also love Gothic Horror films. I purposely avoided all trailers and plot-details so I could go in blind. Unfortunately, Crimson Peak was very disappointing. However, it is still a good movie.

The acting all around was good. Tom Hiddleston was fantastic and I hope to see more of him in the future. Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam were commendable and give good performances. Jessica Chastain is very creepy, but she overacts at times.

The production design and cinematography were some of the best I think I've ever seen. The colour and lighting were absolutely gorgeous. This was pretty much a miracle to witness. The direction by Del Toro was also fantastic.

My main problem with Crimson Peak lies in the story. It was advertised as a horror film with ghosts and ghouls, but the ghosts are in it for ten minutes tops. The real plot is a dramatic love story. I saw every "twist" coming before it happened, and the plot just wasn't as interesting as I wanted it to be. I wasn't scared at all. Was it creepy? Yes. But I didn't find myself paranoid while walking out.

The writing was unfortunately also very mediocre. I never cared about the dialogue between the characters, and some lines were laughably bad. The CGI of the ghosts were 50/50. Sometimes, they were unique and very creepy. Other times, it looked like something out of Spy Kids 3.

Overall, Crimson Peak, though good, is disappointing. If the CGI, writing and story were improved, it would have been a masterpiece. See it if you're interested.
