Dogville

I am very difficult to please as I am a passionate cinephile and therefore not easily impressed. Dogville... WOW!!!....It should have won at the Cannes Film Festival instead of Les Invasions Barbares! But the French were not about to give a prize to a film with "American" actors in it, considering their differences regarding Irak at the time. I now understand why Nicole Kidman was so disappointed. As far as I'm concerned this is one of her best performances. Lars Von Trier is always thought provoking, that is why I enjoy the originality of his films. I was hanging on to every word spoken, every bit of facial expression. I loved the theatre setting idea. So original. Even though the film lasted 3 hours, I was not impatient. You could hear the actors thinking. It was very powerful. Yes, the world can be cruel...naive people must be on their guard. Sad but true. Reality sucks. I felt a lot of emotions during the film. The depiction of men by Von Trier is more than one can bear, almost every single one of them is selfish and disgustingly cruel taking advantage of Grace with their carnal desires. Women will feel revolted by certain scenes. At the end you feel that vengeance is warranted to compensate for the indignities and cruelty suffered by Grace by the dogs of Dogville, men and women included. This is a masterpiece,a chilling classic, don't miss it.
