I was really excited to see Foxcatcher. It received amazing reviews and got tons of award nominations. I also love Steve Carell, and I was very curious to see him in a dramatic role. Well, Foxcacther disappointed me a bit, but was nonetheless a great film.
THE GOOD:
+ The acting! Steve Carell gives a career defining performance as John Du Pont and comes off as beyond creepy. His character wasn't over the top at all, and felt like a real life weirdo. Channing Tatum really surprised me too, as he was absolutely amazing! The rest of the supporting cast were great, especially Mark Ruffalo.
+ The cinematography was gorgeous. The whole movie had a dark and grey look to it that added to the dark story.
+ The writing was superb. The dialogue felt realistic and was often very riveting.
+ The direction was very good, but nothing unique. The scenes were crafted in a simple and dark fashion.
THE BAD:
- This movie was way too long and way too slow! Don't get me wrong, I'm all for a slow-burning thriller, but Foxcatcher was way too slow. Some scenes were pointlessly long and really dragged the movie down. Though I was interested in the story, the painfully slow pace made me zone out many times.
- The climax of the movie isn't really explained and fleshed out too well. I understood why he did what he did, but I would have liked more information.
Overall, Foxcatcher is a very interesting film with outstanding acting from its leads! Unfortunately, the long length and slow pace make this film something I never want to watch again.
RATING: 8.25/10.
