This was truly an epic film that had me completely engrossed. I admit to getting a bit lost in the politics during the last quarter of the movie, but that's mostly due to my lack of knowledge about that era. Daniel Day-Lewis' performance is simply mesmerizing. This is no cookie-cutter villain. He is vicious, yes, but also lives by a strange code of honour - like an early-day mafia. DiCaprio holds his own in this movie, though his accent seemed to falter at times. And although Diaz has never impressed me in the past, she puts in an excellent performance here. She portrays just the right combination of charm, vulnerability, and steely grit. This is really a classic tale of revenge, but it had enough twists in it to make it unique. Combined with the stunning visuals and music, this film is a must-see.
