I always look forward to seeing everything made by the man who gave us Annie Hall and Manhattan. Heck, I even enjoyed the Purple Rose of Cairo, Husbands and Wives, and lots more. But this Hollywood Ending is definitely not on the good side of the median. Dialogue is whipsmart in his better movies, and he has a few good snipes here too, but the reliance on poor sight gags is the big problem in Hollywood Ending. Bumping into furniture gets a little tired after the umpteenth time, and not facing who hes speaking to, is just plain dumb, not funny. Is Vals sense of hearing impaired as well, so that he doesnt know what direction to face? Maybe this humour will play better in France?
