    Skyfall

I'd recommend that you check out some of the previous "James Bond" films before you check out "Skyfall" to get the full effect of this picture. That's because this movie is worth the effort. It's effective as an action film and serves as one of the better entries in the long running series. Having seen some, but not many of the previous 22 titles, I felt like I was missing out on some of the references, but hey, that's my problem, not the films; this is a terrific picture. In this chapter, Agent 007 James Bond (Daniel Craig) is investigating an attack on MI6. What's unsettling is that the enemy is not some maniacal billionaire or a secret organization bent on taking over the world, but a former agent named Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) whom M (Judy Dench) thought was killed years ago in action.

Despite the fact that I felt like I missed out on some of the Easter Eggs and references here and there, I enjoyed this film a lot. Daniel Craig and Judi Dench return in their roles and do a particularly good job here. In fact, the performances are quite strong overall. There are some interesting things going on between these characters, meaning the tension is higher than usual (you don't expect James Bond to die in the film, but It's intense nonetheless) I also enjoyed the villain. This guy is an interesting twist on Bond's character, a corrupted version if you would. He brings a nice sense of menace to the story, which features some excellent chase scenes and intense twists on familiar secret agent stories. I liked the new additions to the cast that are brought with Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris, who I'm sure will play even bigger parts in future films.

There are a couple of moments when the antagonist's plan seems to fall together a bit too conveniently and during the middle I felt like we were missing a grand action set piece to prevent it from sagging, but the opening and the conclusion are strong. Let's not forget the excellent title sequence (featuring Adele's titular song), which is one of the franchise's best. These elements, along with some others I don't want to reveal because they bring In some unexpected surprises (let's just say that some important characters are only introduced later in the film while others that seem important are killed halfway through; I'll say no more) make this a superior action thriller.

If you're a fan of "Bond" you'll be extremely pleased with the mix of callbacks to older films and a continuation of the more serious, gritty picture. I wouldn't choose "Skyfall" as the film to introduce yourself to the character though, even If it’s sure to entertain just about anyone who decides to view It. (Theatrical version on the big screen, January 10, 2013)
