Growing up, I was a huge Peanuts fan. I watched all of the holiday specials at least once a year and used to enjoy reading the old comic strips. So, I was nervous to see how Blue Sky Studios would handle this classic brand. It could have gone one of two ways. It could have been a funny and sweet rendition that pays homage to the original comics and TV specials. On the other hand, it could have been a CGI-washed mess made to make money off of a well known brand. Luckily, it falls into the first category!
The Peanuts Movie was like a full-length Peanuts special. There's not real story or character development. It was many skits around a single general idea strung together. However, it worked very well! Though clichéd and predictable, the story is always fun and often hilarious!
The writing is fantastic. I found myself laughing at the dialogue and the classic slap-stick comedy. All of the Peanuts characters are just as you remember them! I also really enjoyed the extremely fast pace.
The animation is utterly gorgeous. It was a mix of the classic 2D Charlie Brown style with a modern twist! It blended the CGI with actual 2D animation seamlessly!
My only flaws with The Peanuts Movie were in the story. Though it was fun, I wasn't completely invested in anything that was going on. I understand that it was a "kids movie", but it was like watching many classic Charlie Brown 10-minute specials back to back.
Overall, The Peanuts Movie is a hilarious, beautifully animated and very sweet film that pays homage to Shultz's original brand. See it!
