    The Witch

The buzz around The Witch has been astonishing. I've heard people calling it the "scariest and most disturbing film" they've ever seen. I've also heard that most general audiences HATED the film. So I was very curious to see if The Witch was yet another excellent addition to the horror genre or indie bullcrap. Thankfully, it was the first option.

The acting in The Witch was mostly fantastic. The cast was mainly unknowns who pull off very believable performances. Anya Taylor-Johnson is INCREDIBLE and I hope to see her more in the future! Ralph Ineson and Kate Dickie are both great as well. The two young twins were decent, but Harvey Scrimshaw delivers a very mixed performance as the young son. At times, he delivers bad lines in a strange way. But, in one specific scene, he shows his acting talent and completely blew my mind.

My favourite part of The Witch was the direction. Newcomer Robert Eggers directs this film in a way that I have never seen before. From the first scene, the tension and suspense are held throughout the ENTIRE runtime. The scarier scenes are brilliant and actually scared me, unlike most modern horror movies. There were shots of just scenery that really creeped me out.

The tone of The Witch is pitch-black. I was so disturbed and uncomfortable the whole way through. When I exited the film, I felt like I needed to take a very long shower.

The story of The Witch is quite simplistic, but works well. There are many metaphors hidden in here that were very compelling. I would have liked more of the witch, though. My main problem was that the pace was extremely slow. There was a block of 20-30 minutes where virtually nothing happens. This made me a little bit bored. The glacial pace does work in the film's favour at times, but it also took the film down for me.

The Witch is written in very old English. This made the dialogue more realistic, but I had a very hard time understanding what they were talking about. This is partly because of the way it was written, but the actors occasionally mumble the lines. This definitely made me enjoy the movie less.

Overall, The Witch is a great horror film. It is gorgeously shot, well acted and tension-filled. However, the film is slow, incredibly disturbing, and definitely not for general audiences. See it if you're interested.
