    Doomsday

I work hard for my money. And I am sick and tired of disappointment with big budget movies with big name stars. We really wanted entertainment, were in desperate need for it. We chose Doomsday just because it seemed to have action in it. Boy did it ever! But it wasn't just action-packed. This movie actually had a plausible story that was thought through. It wasn't quickly thrown together on a premise like the 3rd Resident Evil (which could have been so darn good had they actually worked on the storyline instead of quickly running with a catchy desert setting) Doomsday is a European flick. It was great seeing several actors we have seen as minor characters in Hollywood movies all playing major roles in this one, and doing a smashing job of it! Rhona Mitra has definitely arrived as a leading action actress. This ain't no The Practice/Boston Legal character for her. She pulls it off as if it was second nature to her. She's got the looks, she's got the attitude, and she's got the delivery! Bravo! Just for that, I hope this movie is a success. But it's more than just her. The writing is very solid, very thought out. Without explaining absolutely everything, they do a smashing job of creating the setting, bringing us up to speed, and introducing storylines that make sense. And the humour is just right. It is not forced, the one liners don't stick out like a sore thumb. They are in the right place at the right time. There aren't too many of them. Again, another sign of great writing, and a genuine care for the story itself. This movie is very much a Road Warrior meets 28 Days Later feel to it. And the beauty of that is again that those are two foreign films, so less Hollywood hype and special effects, and more focus on setting and story. Whereas movies like Hulk and Fantastic Four's Rise of the Silver Surfer are special effects driven, Doomsday uses special effects to create the background setting for the story. The actors and story are first and foremost. WARNING: Doomsday is brutally violent. There is tons of gore and gratuitous violence in this flick. If you have a problem with such gore, stay away from this flick. But if you can stomach it, then this movie will rock your world! A solid story, a stellar cast, a perfect leading lady, tons of action, timed humour... How could I not give it a 10/10 (which I really don't give out often) I expected cheezy with some action, I got incredible entertainment with barely a flaw. Hollywood needs more movies like this and less movies built on effects and star power. You get the bang for your buck, and then some!
