Knocked Up

"Knocked Up" is sweet and raunchy, funny and actually pretty insightful on the subject of an unexpected pregnancy and unexpected romance. In this romantic comedy, Katherine Heigl plays Alison, a professional woman with a promising career in television. After a night of dancing with stoner-loser Ben (Seth Rogen) the two end up in bed together. Alison finds out she's pregnant and now the two have to figure out how they're going to get through this unexpected pregnancy together.

What I like about this movie is that the performances are convincing (something I never thought I'd say in a movie with Katherine Heigl in it) and the main characters really feel like genuine people. Time is dedicated to show who they are, where they've been and where they are going so it's easy to relate to them. It's exciting to see Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen's characters grow (and to a certain extent mature) as the movie plays through. The side characters are funny and more often than once have just enough depth to them to add that little touch of heart to the movie without ever going into melodrama. A lot of the humor is related to either parenting or the stoner culture but there's a lot more going so even if you can't identify with the slackers spending their days smoking or the would-be parents freaking out over the pregnancy there's still a lot to keep you enthralled. For me, there were a couple of times where the raunchy humor and gross out jokes went too far, but thankfully those moments are brief and they won't ruin the experience for you. I really didn't expect to be this enthusiastic about "Knocked Up", but I ended up loving the film. It's a good comedy with plenty of laughs and a lot of sweet moments that will have you smiling and maybe even get you thinking a bit too. (On DVD, December 30, 2012)
