    The Happening

For a movie that got so much negative press and terrible ratings, I expected a real stinker. So I ended up being pleasantly surprised by this one. It ended up being a very good movie, one that I consider worth seeing. That being said, it is not for the faint of heart. There are pretty gruesome scenes in it. But it's basic premise (which I will not give away, even though a lot of people are giving it away) is very interesting, and certainly worth considering! The acting is, well, let's note that it stars Mark Wahlberg, who isn't exactly mister diversity or even an actor who only appears in good movies. The 2nd leading actress is Zooey Deschanel, who also is not known for her diversity. Her wide-eyed stares and blank expressions in this movie are pretty much the same ones she delivered in Elf (with Will Ferrell) And the next most known actor in John Leguizamo, another actor not known for his diverse acting chops nor for his hit movies. So from an acting perspective, yes this movie really isn't much to write about. But it is driven by a great story, another one of those "what would you do if..." scenarios. And this scenario is certainly a creepy one, much different than the over-used terrorist attacks (not that those are not scary just to imagine) I found the pace of the movie to be good... not too many draggy parts. I will admit that the first half of the movie is much better than the second half... but I certainly didn't find that the 2nd half ruined the whole movie. I would have even liked it to last a little longer... maybe more in the 1 hour 45 minute to 2 hour range. But that's just me. So, a surprising solid 7/10 rating in my book. I went in with little to no expectations, as the press and ratings were just so horrible... but I just wanted to see what M. Night Shyamalan did with The Happening. And I certainly do not agree with some of the title of reviews that state that "nothing is happening" in this movie. Plenty happens, and there is plenty food for thought, especially in this day and age of global warming and polluting.
