    The Time Traveler's Wife

If you're a fan of science fiction and you're looking for a sweet love story, maybe something to indoctrinate your sweetheart into the genre, check out "The Time Traveler's Wife". The film follows Henry (Eric Bana), a man who spontaneously travels backwards in time for short bursts and then returns to the present. After falling in love with Clare (Rachel McAdams), a woman who understands the problems of his condition, the two of them try to build a romantic relationship.

To be able to enjoy the movie and appreciate how it handles its material you'll need to have a basic understanding of time travel theory (or be sitting next to someone patient enough to draw you some diagrams) but that's the fun part. Most science fiction stories involve flying cars or laser guns, aliens or cloning. Many people are turned away from romantic drama because they perceive them as little more than “does she/he like me as much as I do? ” for an hour and a half. Mash those two together; you’ve got something fresh. The film does a good job creating some credible drama around this premise, showing us the relationship begin from the couple's first meeting (which because of some timeline shenanigans we actually get to see twice, once for each of the characters) and spanning over several years. Throughout the film it's also entertaining to see glimpses of Henry appearing from the future into an earlier part of the character's lives and part of the fun is trying to figure out which jump in the present coincides with which jump into the past. For that reason there is a decent amount of re-watch value to the film as you see hints of some of the major plot points throughout and piece together which Henry is which. Even without the initial shocks there's enough going on to keep you invested and guessing through a second viewing.

The film isn't going to win over ice-hearted haters of the romantic drama genre. For fans of stories where two beautiful people must find a way to keep their love burning while all of the odds are against them "The Time Traveler's Wife" has a premise that's unique and there's decent charisma between the two leads. Some moments between Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams are genuinely sexy and the performances are good. In many of these starry-eyed stories the drama feels artificial and inserted so that we can have a traditional 3 act story. This film doesn’t escape that contrived drama entirely, but these people do have legitimate problems to deal with. You can understand why the drama is there. It would be difficult to have a relationship while your lover is through no fault of his/her own suddenly gone for weeks on end, only to reappear suddenly.

I’m not going to proclaim that “The Time Traveler’s Wife” is a masterpiece, but it’s good. It will entertain fans of science fiction stories and fans of sappy love dramas too. And you don’t have to go in hooked on both aspects to enjoy it either, so I recommend it. (On Dvd, May 7, 2013)
