CAROUSEL was Oscar Hamerstein's favourite musical in his collaboration with Richard Rogers. It came immediately after the ground breaking Oklahoma. The film reminds me somewhat of a fairy tale starting off in the heavens with God and proceeding to hit earth to tell the wonderful love story of Julie and the carnival barker she falls for. It's emotional, sentimental, but who cares? With that beautiful score that includes SOLILOQUY, If I Love You, You'll Never Walk Alone and its brilliant other tunes, you'll be in seventh heaven. It took 12 years for Carousel to go from stage to screen, but I suppose the folk of that era were grateful for a huge, bright Cinemascope version of the ever enduring Carousel. I believe the idea for Carousel came from a Ferenc Molnar Hungarian short story beautifully remounted to fit the American Landscape. Carousel came at a time Musical Films were at the most popular. You don't dare miss this thrilling adaptation for the screen!
