    Hiroshima mon amour

Alan Renais might not have been as well known as other new wave French directors, but he sure got it right in HIROSHIMA. MON AMOUR. The film only opens with a scene of the infamous tragedy, then moves on to broader themes. The film deals with some stark themes of love and disgrace and the whole theme of consciousness. As with the novels of Marcel Proust, the film discusses the whole notion of time and memory which is of utter importance. The dialogue is top notch as are every other aspect of the film. It's most surprising the film did not get an Oscar Nomination as best foreign film of 1959. Absolutely for mature, thinking audiences only.
