I just saw the original The Magnificent Seven from 1960 on Turner on September 22nd, 2016. It was deliberately shown to compare it to the new arrival the next day. The 1960 version had a much better balanced cast, but when all was said and done, it was a mere entertainment of no great consequence.
The 2016 version does boast some good performances, a facsimile of the same story, a loud, noisy western that is pure cinematic entertainment and not much more! Of interest is to discover the men who are the magnificent seven. The whole tone of the film seems very light, light on script, light on direction and overbearingly annoying with the music. This is a perfect film to see when you are desperate to while away a few hours.
I was first in line to see the new adaptation. I don't regret it, but it's not a great film by a long shot! Wait for it to come on your movie provider in about six months or so!
