Sidney Lumet's searing look at a Holocaust survivor and his life in the new world as a pawnbroker. It is an excessively bleak look at a life that is totally empty except for the work; no joy or laughter. I found it very much of an offbeat film and this could account why Rod Steiger lost the Oscar to Lee Marvin in 1964, the film being such a downer. The B+W cinematography made everything even more oppressive.
