    The Portrait of a Lady

This beautifully looking film from Aussie Jane Campion just didn't catch on as it should have in its day. Based on Henry James's novel, Campion captures all the important themes and is very sensitive with the material. I loved the cast from Nicole Kidman to an amazing Barbara Hershey. John Malkovitch comes off well as does Mary-Louise Parker but it is more the supporting players who pop up such as John Gielgud, Shelley Winters and Shelley Duvall and future great stars like Christian Bale and Viggo Mortensen. No one could write such amazing romantic dramas in the vein of the magnificent Henry James. The one negative point of the film is that at two and a half hours it is a tad to long so my score goes from a 7 to a 6.
