    Wake of the Red Witch

This 1948 flick from then independent Republic Studio starring John Wayne in his usual bravura style of action flicks is not solidly founded perhaps because of poor direction of an unknown cinéaste. It hardly ever appears on a list of John Wayne top films languishing more toward the bottom. What made me want to see the film was the casting of Gail Russell who was down and out by 1948. She acquits herself respectably. But the real story is that John Wayne, a pretty magnanimous actor would not make the film without the casting of Gail Russell whom no one wanted for the role. Wayne wanted to give her a chance at a comeback. He insisted on her casting despite Hollywood backlash. It did not work out in the long run for Miss Russell but it clearly showed a side of John Wayne few are familiar with.
