2012

The plot of 2012 is preposterous. The characters pretend to have depth. And the message at the end is far from subtle. BUT. This is, in some kind of weird way, the opposite of Transformers because the filmmakers spent a lot of money on those visual effects and they are obviously proud to showcase them with long shots that last more than a fraction of seconds. We could say it's a contemplative CGI extravaganza. It is impressive indeed and I would lie if I said I didnt enjoy the extensive scene of destruction of Los Angeles. Take Independence Day, add Deep Impact and multiply it by The Day After Tomorrow, you get 2012, the mother of all disaster movie, ripping-off everything movies of the genre From The Towering Inferno to Armageddon. Of course, the writing isnt really good and it's a very flawed movie, with a lot of clichés and recycled plot devises, but the jaw-dropping visual effects and two particular scenes, that occur before the halfway mark, made it worth it for me. I can say with no shame, that 2012 might become one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Director Roland Emmerich seems to be aware he is over-doing it once again and he goes, way over-the-top, and it just works. It's fun.
