Guy Green directed this very sensitive portrayal of a blind girl's friendship/romance with a black man. Elizabeth Hartman was so perfect in her Oscar Nominated performance as was her Oscar winning mother portrayed by Shelley Winters, a veritable dynamo of wickedness as a mom. This was Shelley's second Oscar and it was totally deserving even more than her 1959 performance in "The Diary of Ann Frank". Sydney Poitier was good as gold yet failed to capture another nomination yet again. The following year he appeared in three great roles but was again shut out!
