Great non-typical Martin Scorsese film about a widow heading out to make a singing career for herself. The acting is positively superb from Chris Christoffersen to Oscar nominated Diane Ladd. But the whole movie belongs to Ellen Burstyn who won the 1974 Best Actress Oscar for her would be dreams of a singing life. The film came along right at the perfect time, during the years of The Women's Liberation Movement. This film became the long-running sit com Alice with Linda Lavin.
