“Annabelle” the prequel and spin-off to “The Conjuring” definitely did not disappoint. I was on pins and needles throughout pretty much of the movie. I’ve got to say as much as I enjoyed “The Conjuring”, I thought “Annabelle” was better. Guess it’s because of the scare factor, and the haunting images that linger with you long afterwards. I have to say it has a really interesting backstory on the source of how the doll became possessed. However, as we come to learn “Annabelle” isn’t the main focus of the story, rather she is more of an icon of evil in the film. Besides that, there are some good creepily effective scenes, weird happenings, and hair-raising moments. I gotta hand it to you, the suspense builds nicely in this picture at certain points, and in such a way to create feelings of apprehension or dread. Of course, the powerful score also adds to the result. I admit, I didn’t see some things coming. The jump scares I found were rapid. My heart was in my throat. The thing that really got to me was the basement and stairwell scene. On another note, there’s some decent character development, an absorbing plot, and the film is well-paced. The cast alone is worth seeing... they’re a likable bunch. There’s no question that veteran actors, Tony Amendola and Alfre Woodard stole the show. I thought both were quite convincing, playing the role of the priest and psychic medium. Also impressive use of camera work, special effects, and sound. Overall, a good horror thriller, especially if you like allegedly true stories about ghosts, demonic spirits, and things that go bump in the night. Just the thing to see to put you in the spirit of Halloween. Don’t miss it.
