The movie is pretty intense which in my eyes is rather good than bad. The story is well overthought and interesting, since like I had to read it in Wikipedia, the mayas really dealt that way and there's some truth in the opening line that civilization this way destroy themselves from within first. Moreover Gibson's comparison to the Iraq is VERY interesting. However, I obviously did not give a 10 why not? Because most people will see this movie as a gorefilm without any meaning. There should have been some sidenotes about its connection to the present and past reality. Concluding whether you know about that relation or not it is at least 9.5 entertaining, and gets a 10 if you are well educated.

What you mean there is no sidenotes about its connection to the present and past reality."men will never be happy because he/she wants more and more even after he/she was given all the gifts" (old man speech at the night gathering) we are never satisfied - Half of the movie is a hunt which was given up at the final stage because of the new adventure (which destroy the civilization)
A much schematised comment. There are some very good, new and truly historical books on the matter, written by specialists. Its a pity more and more adults are beginning to believe in everything they see on the big screen. I think that the movie itself showed that these civilizations were already on the brink of auto-and-mutual destruction. This is a long subject and not an easy one (that can be summed by the two phrases you wrote or by Mel Gibsons view of the World, which he expresses so clumsily and naively in his movies) and I do recommend some reading on it!
I did not say anything else read my review again.
The question of whether a civilisation is destined to self destruct or not is irrelevant. All societies go through continual self destruction and re-invention. The most interesting thing about this movie is that it adds some colour to a recent trip I took to Chichen Itza!
