Avant l'Hiver, as it is called in French, poses a number of problems. The main problem with Winter Chill as with a great many French films nowadays is that they try to be a bit too clever and in so doing make quite the mess of it all. Though the film moves at a snail's pace, it is a trifle difficult to make sense of what is going on, no matter whether watching in English or in French. The only salvation for this partial- turkey has to be the performances. I think Daniel Auteuil is brilliant as is Kristin Scott Thomas whom I admire enormously. Add to this a final twist that makes some amends in repairing a fairly boring film. But it's too little too late!
