So Bad it's Good Rating, when seen back-to-back with "Jurassic Park": 5/5

"Carnosaur" has a few fun sequences and some decent special effects but the movie is poorly put together and the story makes little sense. This film is one of my guilty pleasures. I think you'll know why as soon as I describe to you the plot. Deep in her scientific madhouse of a laboratory, Dr. Jane Tiptree (Diane Ladd) desires nothing more than to give the earth back to its true masters. No, not the animals or the trees, but the DINOSAURS! Using DNA for a pool of various animals, she develops a virus so crazy it makes the one from "Resident Evil" look like a mild flu. This bio weapon impregnates human women, who begin to lay eggs and give birth to live Deinonychus (Velociraptor-like dinosaurs, but with a very distinct puppet look) Afterwards, if the raptors don't get you, you die. Of course, this only applies to the females of the world and her theory is that once all of the women capable of bearing children are dead, well she won't even need to worry about the men anymore, we'll all end up as dino chow, or we'll all die sad and lonely. Our only hope is a washed-up security watchman named Doc (Raphael Sbarge) and an environmentalist named Thrush (Jennifer Runyon) who figure out what the mad scientist is up to.

The best part of the film is Diane Ladd, who plays the most insane mad scientist you've ever seen in a movie, bar none. Her plan to bring dinosaurs back to life is so bizarre that you have to see it to believe it and she gives a lot of energy to her role. When it comes to the special effects… some look pretty bad, especially in lengthy shots but when the Tyrannosaurus is seen from close up it's a pretty decent prop. The blood/gore is fun in a bad movie kind of way, so that's something to look forward to. Did I forget to mention the Tyrannosaurus? That's because it comes out of nowhere and Tiptree keeps it locked up in a laser cage deep underground and feeds nosy people to it.

When the movie does have dinosaurs on the screen it is entertaining but there are far too few moments where all we see are people talking about the incoming disaster so it's way too slow for a B-horror film. I like it because it's just so easy to make fun of but this is a guilty pleasure for sure. If you only watch one movie featuring people getting eaten by dinosaurs released theatrically in 1993… choose "Jurassic Park" for sure (they were released about a month apart) Unless you're looking for something to make fun of with some friends there are much better dinosaur films out there. For its utter insanity though, this picture holds a special spot in my heart. (On DVD, January 4, 2013)
