«I can't really remember when I last had any hope, and I certainly can't remember when anyone else did either. Because really, since women stopped being able to have babies, what's left to hope for? » In the year 2027, the youngest person on Earth is 18 cause human can no longer procreate. A man is asked to escort a young woman who apparently has something that could end the civil war in London. She turns out to be pregnant and the story takes epic proportion as the main character will risk his live to take her safely to their destination. Alfonso Cuaron signs a powerful film that looked good on paper but with his talent he made it even better. He uses a lot of long takes and some of them are simply true «tour de force» as they may leave the viewer wondering how it can have been done. Rather than spending time with too much dialogues, Cuaron shows us a series of photographs on a table to explain the whereabouts of his characters. That way we understand their motivations, their past and their present. Clive Owen plays the hero, an almost alcoholic man who his brought into the situation despite himself. He gives a very sober performance, almost underacting making his character even more realistic. Julianne Moore is the ex-wire who finds him for the job, she has a smaller part but she is strong as usual. Michael Caine is surprising here, playing a role we wouldnt have expected, he sort of is the comic relief of the film but he aint there to kill tension, his character is extremely important to the storyline. Children of Men has very subtle anti-war comments while bringing up lots of philosophical questions about a possible future. It shows the darker side of men and its very realistic. Extremely intense. The war scenes are absolutely awesome, the actors were actually in danger and at some point it feels like they arent acting but rather scared for real. It almost looks like a documentary cause of the haunting long takes. Children of Men tells an epic story with precise dialogues to bring us the information we need to know and it never feels forced. It's a very emotional film but also kind of disturbing. It has real 3-dimensional characters and a real subject matter. It will someday get the «cult film» status. Great social commentary as well. Easily one of the best film of its year. Simply amazing.
