Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Emma Stone and Josh Groban. Do you need any more reasons to go see this movie? Steve Carrell plays Cal Weaver, a 40-year old straight-laced accountant whose marriage has fallen prey to the doldrums of the modern-day fairytale gone wrong. Married to Emily (Julianne Moore), living in a house with a white picket fence and their two kids, his seemingly perfect life quickly unravels as Emily confesses to an affair and demands a divorce. Back in the dating pool after a few decades, Cal struggles to make sense of what happened and find his bearings, until he meets Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), the epitome of the cool player. Taking pity on Cal, Jacob will take him under his wing and make him discover the joys of being single (and cool) again (if you agree that this definition entails adding as many notches on your bedpost as you possibly can) In a series of wacky, unpredictable twists and turns, all the characters in the movie are played out brilliantly, and their own insecurities and fears about love and relationships come to light in a fun, lighthearted way. In a year where Hollywood spewed more stinky poo than a new-born baby, you’ll either spend a fun few hours questioning the importance of love and relationships, or maybe you’ll just have a good laugh. Either way, it’s definitely worth your ticket price.
