In this Japanese film by Nagisa Oshima (1932-2013) we have a sensitive director, a militant modernist with a taste for razor sharp social critique. This 1968 effort launched a national debate based on a 1958 case in which a Japanese school girl was raped and murdered by a Korean teen. This is the bare bone case we have from the start, Oshima developing a story of execution that is fraught with unimaginable horror. It's not a perfect film by a long shot, but it has a great deal to say and show. It is a film that boldly demands that capital punishment come to an end.
