I must say I quite enjoyed this third installment in the now - “Insidious” trilogy. It’s just as good as what came before... maybe a little better. With an engrossing plot, same creepy atmosphere, and genuinely unsettling sequences, this film takes you by the throat and doesn’t let you go till it’s over. Knowing, this is also a prequel, I was glad to see that director/writer, Leigh Whannell was able to nicely link the 2 previous movies into this 3rd one. He certainly did a good job in doing so. However, this time around, there is an interesting take on a whole different story with new characters, and not surprisingly, “a no-nonsense psychic Elise” enters into the picture again. Besides this, the cast all did a great job in their performances, but Lin Shaye’s portrayal of Elise is without question, marveling. After all she is the glue to the “Insidious” films. You can’t help but cheer her character on, feel concern for her, even laugh with her when she is up against and fighting off evil spirits. Really, she is a force to be reckoned with. Also, in this 3rd film there is mounting tension, and a feeling of trepidation, leading up to some decent creeps and scares. There are plenty of jumpy scenes throughout, cleverly orchestrated –effective too, and just enough to mess with your head. The main evil entity looked pretty disturbing, but as to why it was there is a mystery. It leaves you hanging. Perhaps it has some kind of connection to the family, but they never really give an explanation for it otherwise. However, not all is scary and edgy with this production. As you come to see there are unexpected bits of humor in some of the scenes to lighten the mood. Also, the pacing in this flick is relaxed and slow, it builds it’s energy gradually. The visual effects and make-up are very well done. Music score of course is fantastically creepy as that is a familiarity associated with the “Insidious” films. Lastly, I was pleased to see there was more of a detailed history on “The Further” as that helped to shed new light on the spirit-filled realm. Overall, greatly entertaining –another successful chapter in this spine-tingling series. Looking forward to the 4th one.
