When you are promised a high budget to see a shark horror movie and you never see the shark and the characters mostly speak jibberish the whole time in the most dull location ever with visuals that crusts the eyes you know you've hit rock bottom as one of the worst films in cinema history. I watched the making of and it was a mess and so is the result. Spielberg's career barely got by after this, it's just a reminder of how early on in his career he was. I laugh at this movie every time it's on tv, it's so long too.

Steven Spielberg followed Jaws with Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial. For a while he was the most cutting edge movie maker in the world. His movies were delightfully entertaining.
Your remarks about Spielberg are not very well founded as he had incredible critical and commercial hits one following the other... all after JAWS! Jaws isn't a very big deal but it merits more than a 1. I think you have it in for the movie or Spielberg! OBJECTIVITY is a must for any critic!
His career barely took off after this? Buddy, this was the highest-grossing film of all time when first released. It cemented Spielberg's reputation as one of the greatest filmmakers.
