We are so used to the opera La Bohème that I absolutely had to see this dramatic rendition with two of the greatest silent film stars... Lillian Gish and matinée idol John Gilbert. I must admit I wanted to hear the operatic musical background but even worse was the "no dialogue". It all felt so strange. However the lives of the four main Bohemians: Mimi, Rodolfo, Mussetta and Marcello are pretty convincing. The great King Vidor directed the film but I can't help wondering what producer had the gall to turn A GRAND OPERA into a silent film. It's just O. K., as far as I'm concerned. I needed the music to make this a true event for me. By the way I have a great 81/2 x 11 B & W photograph from that 1926 film depicting Mimi and her lover Rodolfo.
