The musical score, (with the exception of the two solos and the revolutionary "hymn" featured effectively at the conclusion of the film) was maddeningly monotone, and did little if anything to enhance the story. Important chunks of the novel were left out, with disappointing results. Squalor, filth and hard times were depicted in the extreme. The overblown costumes and makeup were not only distracting, but disturbing. Moments of this film showed the promised of something epic, but frequently fell short. The nobleness of Jean Val Jean, following the "candlestick" incident, was constant, and moving throughout.
