    Madame Bovary

I was very eagerly awaiting this new version of Madame Bovary having taught the novel in my French Literature classes and liking the 1940's Jennifer Jones version quite a bit. It might seem like a tale that has been told a million times, that of a cheating wife, but in the hands of writer Gustave Flaubert, this has become one of the greatest novels of world literature.

All the ingredients are seemingly present for this re-telling of the tale, MIA WASISKOWSKA and company, but for certain reasons the film has never made an impression on anyone as the 1940's version, a big hit. One of the problems, to my mind is MIA herself. She looks just too damn young for the part. One truly needs a slightly older, or older looking actress in this role of a country woman who is wise beyond her years, as well as being the awful person she is. Mia looks too innocent to pull it off.

That was not the only draw-back. Carving a screenplay from one of the most celebrated romantic novels is a daunting task. My over-all feeling is that those in charge... producers, the director etc. simply did not know their material as well as they should have.
