Writer/Director Patricia Rozema's bold liberties pay off handsomely in her 1999 film which puts an unsubtle but provocative spin on the story of an impoverished young girl. The little liked 1814 novel 'Mansfield Park' receives new life from the writer/director. The masterstroke of the film is Rozema's transformation of the meek Fanny into a resourceful, brainy woman much like Austen herself. A possible one time experience in which a film outshines the original novel!
