Although they have not set a year for when this movie takes place, we can assume it’s set about 20-30 years from now. Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a washed-up, broke old boxer turned Robot Boxing promoter. During yet another robotic setback, Charlie finds out that the mother of his 11-year old son has passed away. Father and son struggle to get along until the boy stumbles on Atom, a buried sparring robot in the junkyard. With nothing to lose, this trio will embark on an epic underdog journey that will have you cheering in your movie theater seat (I am not kidding, there were actual people cheering in our theater during fights) You have a few relatively cheesy moments, but they’re short and trumped easily by the fighting. The fight scenes are beautiful (and not just because of Hugh Jackman) and it kept me wondering how they filmed some of them. I wasn’t surprised when I saw that the Boxing consultant was none other than boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard. I highly recommend this one. Even if you have kids (the violence is mitigated by the fact that they are robots and the language is relatively clean)
