    Red Dawn

The remake of "Red Dawn" isn't without its problems but is in some ways an improvement on the original. As in the 1984 film the premise may be difficult for people to swallow. After the crumbling of the European Union, the NATO alliance has lost its punch. North Korea and Russia are becoming increasingly friendly and stockpiling their weapons… but for what you ask? INVASION! After a mysterious power outage, a group of high school students find their small town, and most of the U.S. under siege by invading North Korean forces. Jed Eckert (Chris Hemsworth), his brother Matt (Josh Peck), their friend Robert (Josh Hutcherson) and a few other high schoolers who manage to avoid detection by the enemy take on the Identity of the "Wolverines", guerilla fighters who prove that America will not be taken over so easily. Yeah the premise is ridiculous, but the movie is set up with plenty of exposition to show how and why this invasion would happen. You may have to suspend your disbelief, but if you think of this as a science fiction film set on a parallel earth, you shouldn't have any problem with it.

What you will have trouble with is the characters that do not feel fleshed out and the poorly shot action sequences, which are so frantic and shaky that you will have trouble understanding what is going on, especially when it comes down to the hand-to-hand combat. The film has a lot of energy and the ending is much cleaner than in the original film, so I felt like that was an improvement. While it isn't anything to rise up and cheer about, it's entertaining and if you've ever played a video game where you single handedly turned the tide of a war and thought to yourself that it would be awesome if you could do that in real life, I say check it out. This is an instance where I'm not sure which film is better; the original or the remake since neither are great films in my opinion. Nonetheless, if you are excited to see this film and you go check it out, you'll have a good time. (Theatrical version on the big screen, December 2, 2012)
