    Riddick

It seems letting star Vin Diesel and original Pitch Black writer/director David Twohy have their way with Riddick was a smart move by Universal. For Riddick it is a step above the usual SciFi schlock, managing to entertain despite its many familiarities and it's modest budget. The first third is particularly interesting, chosing to do a Cast Away type marooning scenario with Diesel all alone trying to survive the planet's many predators. Even if it is a glaring rip-off, it is a surprisingly fresh approach and a welcome opening act to what eventually reverts into the usual bounty hunter vs Riddick vs slimy alien creatures motif. Even with some lame dialogue and acting, a vast improvement on the last Riddick and a worthy companion piece to the original.
