This movie, the latest from legendary director Oliver Stone took my expectations on quite a ride. At first my expectations were low. But hey, I'd heard Blake Lively had a three-way in it so at least there was that. About 45 minutes in I was like, hey, this could actually be really good. The story, concerning two pot growers (Taylor Kitsch Aaron Johnson) who run afoul of a Mexican cartel, that in turn kidnaps their shared girlfriend (Lively) had tremendous promise. Yet by the finale, the entire thing had crash-landed in a bloody heap of inconsistency, incoherence and idiocy. The end in particular is such a train wreck, I couldn't believe it was made by the same director who did PLATOON and JFK. A shame for the supporting cast which is uniformly excellent. Salma Hayek is terrific as the head of the cartel, as is John Travolta as a sleazy, corrupt DEA agent. But it is Benecio Del Torro that owns this one as the cartel's brutal enforcer. Unfortunately, after a strong set up, the film goes totally awry with no real payoff or climatic development. Basically a mess.
