    Shutter Island

Although I appreciate the artistry involved in making this film, from the theatrical settings to the very awkward musical score, the movie gets taken in like a bad batch of a great beer. For some reason you have all the ingredients yet the outcome is less than the parts. That is not to say that the movie isn't interesting or that it is badly played or even that a great effort was made to make this picture unique, its that from the viewer's perspective the movie simply doesn't make sense as a whole. Its awkwardness looses the viewer's respect for the film and it quickly turns itself into something of a joke. Its really sad to say because Shutter Island was a good movie. The scenes that took forever to unveil themselves and overtly theatrical hallucinations made it such that by the time that the viewer is exposed to the truth, he really doesn't care all that much about it. Yes Leonardo is a great actor. Yes Martin Scorsese is a great director. However, this movie was not like CAPE FEAR like the previous reviewer mentioned. It was a better attempt at a horror movie that ultimately was unsuccessful. I certainly hope that the success or mostly failure of this movie will guide future endeavors as this may have been a more artsy take on a potentially great Horror/Thriller.

While I respect your review, I think you are missing Scorcese's intentional ambiguity at the end. The audience is left to question the ending regarding the mental health of DiCaprio. You may change your view if you take the time to watch it again. So Yes you have all the ingredients, but unlike other directors, you are left to wonder at the end... and especially when DiCaprio states just before he walks away, willingly, Would you rather live like a monster or die living in peace? At no other point in the film is he passive or submissive...

You know why I dislike this movie? Because it lacks of originality, watch Memento, a movie made a while ago, and you'll understand what I mean, it's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It's 100x better then shutter island. Once you finish watching that movie, you will have a greater aspect on originality. It's almost as brilliant as fight club.
