Don't read the book before seeing the movie, you'll be very disappointed!!! I was expecting a colorful movie with beautiful landscapes, fascinating characters, an insight into the Chinese culture of the 19th century, I was eager to see how the laotang relationship would translate on screen. Yet, I had to yomp, back and forth in time, between present-day Shanghai and pre-modern Hunan and nothing to quench my excitation. The characters of Lily and Snow Flower, the main protagonists of the book, aren't developed at all because so much time and energy are wasted on the pointless story between Sophia and Nina. And don't even get me started on Hugh Jackman's out of blue cameo. Really? You have to hire a Western famous actor to make sure people are going to run to the theaters to see an Asian movie? Wow! A lovely story with so much potential was turned into a farce just to appeal to a larger audience. What a pity to see a such promising material wasted like that! I guess I'm not buying the DVD.
