I know that Star Trek has been out for some time now but I was a little wary of seeing it especially in the light of this years string of disappointments like Night of the Museum 2 and in particular Transformers: ROTF. But, out of simple boredom and a desire to relax I went and saw Star Trek this past weekend. All I can say is “Wow, finally a smartly written, thrilling, completely satisfying piece of summer blockbuster pureness. ” I am not a Star Trek fan, although I did enjoy the original series, I haven’t even watched any of the other films so this is my first Star Trek film. However, this film despite the having the Star Trek moniker is appealing to everyone who’s looking for an exciting, even funny, sci-fi movie. The movie starts off with a blast that grabs you, pulls you in, and from there it's non-stop popcorn fun. The story is intelligent, smart, but never heavy handed. The time travel aspect was handled perfectly, it's explained clearly and simply but is presented so well that you easily accept it and go with it. Another nice feature of this film was the action scenes were never unnecessary or over long, and best of all were the use of nice, wide shots and very few “shaky-cam” close-ups allowing you to enjoy those scenes as they are a wonder to behold. I particularly enjoyed watching the Enterprise rise up out of Saturn’s gaseous moon, with the ringed-planet filling the background, it was breathtaking and was one of the many shots that gives this movie an grand scale, epic quality. So the special effects are top-notch, the story is cool, what more do we need? Well, how about some real acting? Each of the classic characters, from Kirk and Spock to Scotty and Uhura are brought to life in a new, fresh kind of way while retaining the essence of the characters they are resurrecting. But more than that they actually have real feelings and motivations, I mean right from the beginning you immediately connect with these characters, and that rarely happens for me. So if for some reason you haven’t seen this movie go see it because unless you hate this kind of movie there’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy it thoroughly. It’s a brilliant piece of entertainment that leaves you wanting more!
