This first Ingrid Bergman film for new husband Roberto Rossellini is a huge disappointment in this story of a penniless woman who tries to find a new life with a fisherman. Ingrid who was a great fan of Rossellini and his neo-realist films of the 1940's could never have imagined that all five or six films she made with her husband were basically all 'bombs'. In 1955 she returned to her roots to make Anastasia and won the Oscar for Best Actress of the year. The Bergman/Rossellini duo produced nothing of value.
