This enormous film is not one of the better features of director Carol Reed who gave us such gems as 'Odd Man Out' and 'The Third Man'. Reed's historical account follows Michelangelo's aesthetic battles with Pope Julius II as he toiled on the Sistine Chapel. Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison offer worthy performances, but the film's slightly overblown production values and its considerable length overshadow their efforts. It will also come as no surprise that there is no mention of Michelangelo's homosexuality. Leaving out such pertinent information about the artist makes the whole thing totally absurd. Thus my very low score.
