There are so many of these types of films released in any given year, all with similar titles, so many in fact that it often becomes impossible to differentiate between them. The Conjuring is however a singular bright spot amidst the heap of underwhelming supernatural hodgepodge that has been tossed at audiences lately. Yes it recycles most of the singnature templates of the genre "slamming doors, falling pictures, birds flying into windows, creepy sleepwalking children etc. etc. However the fact that it is based on a true, documented occurrence, observed by real people, played here with great gusto by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson does lend it a greater degree of credibility than many films of its kind. And increased narrative credibility lends itself to an increased level of fear, fear that maybe demons do exist. A spooky story told with great patience by a director and cast who work hard for their scares and create an eerie sense of realism the entire time. Unless your talking about The Exorcist, a film like this really can't be done any better.
