    The Emigrants

Liv Ullmann earned an Oscar Nomination in this epic story of Emigrants from master Swedish director Jan Troell. It's a familiar story, here a band of Swedes who leave their country for the northern state of Minnesota during the 19th century. Aside Liv's outstanding performance, director Troell appears to be full of knowledge and understanding of the plight of these people en route in a gargantuan adventure. Emigrants was nominated for Best Foreign Film in 1971 but lost to the Italian film: 'The Garden of the Finzi-Contini'. It is rather odd and perplexing that Liv Ullmann earned her nomination a year later in 1972 for a 1971 film. It was probably released to the Oscar Committee for Foreign Film consideration in 1971 but given a general release in 1972. Thus director Jan Troell also earned an Oscar Nomination as Best Director in 1972.
