The original Raid is bar none one of the greatest action/martial arts movies ever made. So I was curious to see if this sequel could do what all good sequels are supposed to do and top the original. Well I didnt think it was possible but The Raid 2 has done just that and may in fact be the greatest example of operatic carnage and brutality ever put on celluloid. Part 2 adds almost an hour to its running time so as to include the only thing that was missing from the original, that being a truly compelling narrative. Yes this film even holds your attention in between the action, as it details the undercover exploits of our returning hero cop, as he tangles with various gangsters both in and out of prison. There are so many things to love here I couldn't even list them all. A stunning prison fight in the mud, which matches the opening of Saving Private Ryan for sheer co-ordinated chaos gets the blood pumping early and the film never looks back. Its just one bravura fight sequence after another, each seemingly more brutal than the last, highlighted by a duo of assassins whose preferred weapons are a pair of hammers and an aluminum bat and ball. If the final battle in a kitchen doesn't bring you out of your seat with resounding applause you are not alive. As unbelievably violent and draw-droppingly incredible as any film I have ever seen, brilliantly shot and edited to boot and destined to leave a giddy smile on the face of every action fan who gives it a chance. I don't give movies these days 10's because I believe only the classically iconic motion pictures are worthy of it, however this is as close to perfection as an action film can get and should be rightly regarded as the pinnacle of its genre for many years to come. All I can say to director Gareth Evans is BRAVO!!!
