The Raven

My review for The Raven Make no mistake, it was the full moon that compelled me to go see "The Raven"... so glad I did. I never quite realized that Edgar Allan Poe was such a masterful and mysterious writer. This film was highly suspenseful and gripping. I enjoyed the storyline and found it quite thrilling with Poe's actual writings entwined throughout. The city's dark rainy streets, and oppressive atmosphere seem to pull you in, locking your eyes to the screen. The visuals and cinematography is amazing as well. I would say this picture grimly reflects this American author's life as it really was. John Cusack nailed his role perfectly as Poe, capturing this man's charismatic, creative, and tortured self very well. I couldn't help thinking how much Cusack resembled Poe, not just in his looks, but also in his characterization. The other cast members did a fantastic job as well. As for the pace of this movie, it swiftly moves along and keeps you guessing all the way to the dramatic conclusion. There are many scenes to make you jump, lots of tense activity that add to the excitement. The killer plays a deranged madman. All through the film, I was constantly making wild guesses as to his identity, but was never quite sure. Only in the very end does he reveal his true self. I can tell you I was very surprised to find out who this elusive killer was. Also, I should mention that the murders in this flick are horrific and extremely gruesome... lots of blood and gore to churn ones stomach and make you want to shut your eyes. Lastly, I thought the 18th century setting for this movie was historically accurate. The beautiful costumes and hairdos were remarkable. In closing, some people may have issues about this fictional account/story about Poe but it makes for a great thriller. Get out to see "The Raven" now.
