One of the very great war dramas that covers WW I in which Miss Dunne loses a husband and then the approach and terror of WW II at her son's enlisting/draft into a worse war that engulfed Europe again. Miss Dunne plays a long suffering mother to great effect. That was Irene Dunne's glory. She could sing in operatic fashion and did so on stage and screen. She played light comedic roles to perfection and she was the ultimate in dramatic roles. Clarence Brown brought such insight and sensitivity to a film that unfolded over many years. Miss Dunne and the large array of supporting players like Gladys Cooper and Dame Mae Whitty get it all right. Roddy McDowall as the younger son coupled with rising juvenile stars Peter Lawford and Van Johnson make this an unforgettable experience.
